Kevin Garnett was recently seen engaging in a conversation with former teammate and 2008 NBA champion Paul Pierce. Kicking things off with an introduction, the main topic of discussion soon diverted towards the latest happenings in the world of professional basketball.
The duo began by touching base on Los Angeles Lakers player Anthony Davis, who recently received a three year extension in exchange for a whopping $186 Million. Davis?s extension reminded Pierce of the major news that had dominated the NBA world for quite some time – The $304 million Supermax contract awarded to Jaylen Brown.
Pierce opined that such contracts ?should have been out there? in the earlier days. The former player brought out the example of Michael Jordan to elaborate on his point.
?MJ in 98 was getting $30 million a year,? said Pierce during the conversation. ?So like, how did the money go down after that since we was in the league.” Pierce said that with the changing times, everyone is receiving ?consistent 30 million dollar contracts and 200, 300 million contracts?.
With the BR basketball related income reportedly going worldwide and the new age media dominating, Pierce understands that this results in the NBA allegedly making more money, leaving more of it for the players. Adding to his former teammate?s point, Garnett brought attention to the fact that the reach of the NBA is so far now that anyone from any corner of the world can watch the league?s games. The former player went so far as to say that one could ?get a game in Jupiter and Pluto?. ?Streaming?s changed everything bro,? Garnett added. ?When you was talking about the Jordan deals and all that, that was the industry fighting over the pie. They built and built and built and grew the pie.”
The pie is definitely much bigger now than anyone could have anticipated back at the time of His Airness.
Kevin Garnett defended Brown’s extension
Even though Kevin Garnett shared his woes about not having such contracts during his era, he has been nothing but happy for Jaylen Brown?s Supermax extension.
Such enthusiasm, however, was not something that was carried by other NBA enthusiasts. From controversial commentator Ben Shapiro to other basketball fans, everyone questioned how could someone who allegedly has ?weak left-hand skills? could be the recipient of this record shattering contract. A Twitter handle commented on the same some time ago.
