With Magic Johnson now at the helm of an NFL team, there are higher expectations upon the players. Following an unexpected and disappointing defensive performance, all attention is focused on the coach and the team’s ownership. Recently, a media veteran commented on the team’s need to improve their defense and also noted the stringent approach of the ownership group. Even new co-owner Magic didn’t hold back in his criticism after a disappointing loss to the Chicago Bears.

It raises the question of just how strict he is with the team. A sportswriter with 20+ years in experience shares similar concerns.

During a podcast, Mike Jones a writer for The Athletic, was questioned about the lackluster defensive showing of Magic Johnson’s Washington Commanders. He mentioned how it is quite disappointing because the team’s roster boasts talent and a focus on defensive specialization. However, Jones also remarked that the current scenario is undeniably unfavorable for the team. Notably, the 5x NBA champion also did not exempt his new team from critique.

Discussing the same, Mike Jones noted, “If Magic Johnson and ownership are not afraid to make public comments criticizing the way the team is playing,” he added, “What are they saying behind closed doors? That’s not a good spot to be in if you’re Ron.”

Despite boasting an impressive defensive talent, the team has been unable to achieve the desired results this season. After starting with a promising 2-0 record, they have shown bad performance in the following consecutive matches.

With the team unexpectedly conceding 30 points over these games, it’s no surprise that Coach Ron Rivera is quite dismayed and disappointed. Jones’ comment on the Commanders’ defense came after Johnson’s harsh criticism of the team.

Magic Johnson openly criticized his NFL team

Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Lakers legend joined a group of 20 partners who acquired the Washington Commanders for $6.055 billion.

As an owner, Magic said, “The Commanders played with no intensity or fire. We didn’t compete in the first half.” He added, “It was too big of a hole to climb out of and that is why we ended up losing.”
