No matter the circumstances today, Allen Iverson was one of the NBA’s brightest stars in the post Jordan era. AI was also known for his lavish lifestyle during his peak and being a trendsetter in the turn of the century fashion. Appearing on his podcast show, Mark Jackson and his son, Mark Jackson Jr. aka Bluu, discussed an instance based on the lines of Iverson’s carefree and expensive lifestyle. Jackson revisited the time he was playing against ‘The Answer’ in the playoffs and he had gone shopping in a Philadelphia store.

He recollects the store was closed in the middle of the day. “I see people inside, and the store is closed. I look inside, and AI is in there. They got the store closed for AI,” Mark Jackson said. He further mentioned that Allen Iverson asked the store staff to let him in. “At some point, while we’re standing in the store, his white Rolls Royce is parked at the bus stop, right outside the door. Car hits his Rolls Royce. I’m sitting there like, yo, they just hit you. You kidding me? He [Iverson] is like, ‘Just give me a reason to drive the black one tomorrow’,” Jackson recalled.

Allen Iverson’s reply left even Bluu impressed on the show. In fact, he termed the 11x All Star as a pioneer in the fashion sense in the NBA. “Allen Iverson walked so a lot of these players can run, so SGA can run, and Westbrook could run and wear whatever they want and be a fashion statement when they walk in close,” Mark Jackson Jr. stated. However, it can never be denied that AI had to pay a price for his lifestyle choices.

Allen Iverson’s off-court troubles

Allen Iverson had setbacks from the initial stage of the career itself. He got into legal trouble when he was just 18. AI was convicted for three felonies for his involvement in a brawl at a bowling center. The altercation had resulted in several injuries, including a woman becoming unconscious. However, fans did not lose their faith in him back then because of his athletic prowess. And he was also given an early release because of lack of evidence.

AI went on to turn the tables for him with his NBA success. He is said to have amassed a wealth of $200 million from his NBA career. But his extravagant lifestyle involving no bar expenditure on clothing, dining, strip clubs and car collection got to him. Apart from this, he also got into addiction to alcohol and gambling issues. The ex-NBA star also went through a divorce, which worsened the situation for him. Eventually, Iverson had to declare bankruptcy in 2012.

Although he made some recovery through his lifetime deal with Reebok, AI could never reach back to his prime wealth. Despite all these setbacks, Allen Iverson remains a story of on-court mastery and a trendsetter in the NBA.
