Two months from now, the hoops world will witness the much-awaited FIBA World Cup, jointly hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Team USA looks forward to reclaiming the title, they last won in 2014.

The United States team has indeed got the NBA’s backing. Young NBA talents like Austin Reaves, Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero, and Anthony Edwards will reportedly don America’s colors during the FIBA World Cup.

Earlier, Victor too had plans to be on national duty for the FIBA World Cup. Now, however, the Frenchman has reportedly walked back on his decision to play for France in August.

In a statement via L’Equipe, Wembanyama said, “It would not be realistic in terms of development and not prudent in terms of health. I hope people will understand. It’s frustrating for me, too. The France team is still central to me. I want to win as many titles as possible with the team. But I think it’s a necessary sacrifice.”?

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst also confirmed that Wemby decided not to show up for France to prepare well for his rookie season. Bleacher’s Report has also tweeted Wembanyama’s admission.

During his interview with L’Equipe, Victor Wembanyama pointed out that his new team, the Spurs, does not have anything to do with him staying away from the national team. He told that San Antonio was okay with any decision he took. The 19-year-old explains his decision in a well-thought-out manner, after consulting his personal fitness team.
