The Los Angeles Lakers are a certified powerhouse in the NBA. Not only does their roster boast some of the best basketball players on the planet, including the mighty LeBron James, but also a formidable coaching staff. Consequently, the combination of these factors makes them one of the favorites to lift the title every season.

After the appointment of Darvin Ham as the head coach of the Lakers, the management trusted LeBron’s former aid Chris Jent to fulfil the role of being an assistant coach in 2022. Recent rumors, however, suggest that he might be heading towards Ohio State to take up the head coaching job.

A popular host on Sirius XM NBA Radio, Brian Geltzeiler, posted a rather interesting tweet on X recently. Expressing his thoughts on the potential appointment of Jent, he tweeted, “Hearing that Laker assistant Chris Jent is a viable candidate for the Ohio State men’s basketball head coaching vacancy. His close relationship with @kingjames makes him a compelling choice.”

Notably, Jent shares a close connection with LeBron James. From 2006 to 2011, he served as the assistant coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. During this period, James evolved and flourished as a power forward under Jent’s guidance, who at that point was LeBron’s personal shooting coach. In addition to this, the 54-year-old also established cordial ties with the current Lakers coach Darvin Ham during their time with the Atlanta Hawks.

Before joining the Lakers in 2022, Jent has had a long-standing coaching career with multiple franchises. After hanging his boots as a professional player in 2001, he tried his luck in coaching in 2003. He joined the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2003-04 season as its deputy.

Following this, he joined the Orlando Magic in 2004 and was made the interim head coach to see off the final 18 games of the 2004–05 season. The big breakthrough of his career arrived when he was chosen as the Assistant Coach and Director of Player Development of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Then in 2011, Thad Matta offered him the role of an assistant coach at Ohio State for two seasons. After that, he bounced around for single seasons at teams like the Sacramento Kings, and the Bakersfield Jam, returning to Ohio for the 2016-17 campaign. Finally, Chris Jent decided to stay with the Atlanta Hawks and after spending six years there, he made a move to reunite with LeBron and Ham by joining the Lakers.

Fans will have to wait and see if these rumors materialize. Many in Los Angeles, however, will be hoping they still get to see the trio of James, Jent, and Ham together in the Lakers’ pursuit of winning another championship.
