Gabrielle Monique Union-Wade’s acting journey began in 1993. Since then, she’s appeared on many TV shows and movies, including She?s All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Bad Boys II, Think Like a Man, Daddy?s Little Girls, etc.

She’s widely popular for her appearance on the most-watched TV show – Friends. Though her role was brief, she garnered a lot of attention. On the show, she appears in season 7, ep. 17th, ?The one with the cheap wedding dress.??

During her early acting days, Gabrielle Union admits to having cravings for social validation. She bitingly says, ?I just wanted to be thought of as cute?.

Krista Smith asks Gabrielle if she ever felt ?chosen? as a struggling actress. In reply, Union confesses how badly she wanted to be ?chosen.?

In fact, being chosen by casting directors was one of the driving forces in her life. The need for validation went beyond getting picked for roles. All Union wanted was to feel like she’s chosen for her attractiveness. She just wanted to know ?if someone outside of my parents thinks I?m cute, attractive, lovely, whatever.? Her craving for this validation didn’t end.?

Why did Union feel exposed as hideous?

Rejections hit hard, especially when validation is the only driving force in your life. Unfortunately, this was true for Gabrielle Union. When casting directors gave roles to actresses who looked better than her, it crushed Gabrielle Union.

Speaking about rejections, the NBA star?s wife says, ?Rejections robbed me of my confidence, my joy. I just felt like I was exposed as hideous.?

She knew she needs therapy. On the podcast, she also talks about how she worked on her insecurities in therapy. Only through therapy she could address her childhood issues and understand the value of self-love.?

Gabrielle doesn’t just establish herself as a successful actor today. She’s much more than that! Union was a part of the Time?s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She’s also received the NAACP image award.

It’s certainly hard to believe someone as accomplished as Gabrielle can have social validation issues. It gives you a perspective on how humans are so fragile.
