The Golden State Warriors have been in the news recently as they find themselves in the midst of a team shuffle. It was barely a week ago when Jordan Poole made a shocking departure from the team as part of a trade for 12x All-Star Chris Paul. As free agency officially commences later this week, Stephen Curry And Co are set to lose another key player.

The Warriors faced a disappointing exit from the playoffs as they were comprehensively beaten by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Conference Semis. A lot of changes were expected, and the Warriors have done just that.

Kendra Andrews, an NBA reporter for ESPN, took to Twitter to announce that Donte DiVincenzo will not be picking up his $4.7 million player option with the Warriors. Instead, he will enter unrestricted free agency. The two-time NCAA Champion had signed a two-year deal worth $9.3 million in July, with a player option included. Having declined the latter, DiVincenzo enters the market now as a free agent.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks cites the fact that DiVincenzo was simply too pricey to keep as the franchise was already much above the luxury tax threshold and was prioritizing a reunion with Draymond Green this summer. The most that could have been offered to DiVincenzo in a new contract was $5.4 million.

Speculation arises over where will DiVincenzo head next. Josh Hart, a player for the New York Knicks, has publicly expressed his desire to form a team alongside him and Jalen Brunson in order to give the Knicks three former Villanova stars in the blue and orange. DiVincenzo’s performance in the last season could make him a favorite pick amongst other teams. These include the Rockets, Timberwolves, and Lakers.

What does losing the two players mean for Stephen Curry and his Warriors?

Donte DiVincenzo’s career with the Golden State Warriors was something to marvel upon. Out of the 72 games he ended up playing last season, he accumulated an average of 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 3.5 assists per contest.

Jordan Poole’s performance, on the other hand, was not that commendable. Fans observed a downgrade in the 23-year-old’s performance this year. He could average only 10.3 points, shooting 25% from beyond the arc and 34% from the field in the playoffs.

The loss of both DiVincenzo and Poole leaves the Warriors pretty thin at the guard position since DiVincenzo and Poole could be trusted to make use of an offense and play off the ball. Stephen Curry clarified that losing Poole was a tough decision, but it all won’t matter if Chris Paul acts as a true floor general in leading the second unit and helps them win the championship next season.
