Irrespective of whether someone is acquainted with the basketball or not, the name Michael Jordan resonates with millions, globally! After all, the Chicago Bulls legend was one of the most well-known faces in the world during his time in the league. Naturally, his fans thronged to the shops to buy his #23 jerseys. Despite sharing the famous number with GOAT rival LeBron James, it seems like Jordan has the clear edge in this battle.

Jordan’s jersey still tops the charts when it comes to all-time jersey sales from NBA official stores. This is an enormous achievement since the player retired almost two decades ago.

Recently, the Los Angeles Lakers confirmed that King James will go back back to wearing the #23 in honor of the late Bill Russell. Although James is a hugely popular figure across the world, he is still far away from beating Jordan’s jersey sales.

There are no concrete numbers about the official jersey sales. However, a 2008 article revealed that Jordan’s jersey topped the list of NBA stores’ all-time best sellers. Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson jerseys took the second and third spots, respectively.

Interestingly, the store did not reveal the jersey number. The six-time NBA champion sported #23 for the majority of his career. However, he also wore the #45 for a brief time after coming back from retirement and the #9 briefly for the Washington Wizards.

James will be sporting Jordan’s number again

Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell most famously wore the #6. The league decided to retire his number following his demise last year. But players like James were allowed to keep it as they were already wearing the number.

A few days ago, James’ agent confirmed that the billionaire will sport the #23 in honor of Russell. Interestingly, this caught the attention of Michael Jordan fans on Twitter, who dug into the past to bash James’ latest decision.

The four-time NBA champion sported the number during his first stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers and he shifted to 6 with the Miami Heat. He again shifted to 23 after his 2014 return to the Cavs.
