Earlier today, soccer fans around the world were left in shock, as the European Court of Justice (ECJ) stopped UEFA and FIFA from blocking any breakaway competition. This judgment comes as a huge boost to the European Super League, which is backed by Real Madrid and Barcelona. The European Super League is valued at around $3.25 billion.

However, the ESL still faces a tough road ahead, as it faces backlash from all corners of the soccer world. NBA star and ardent Chelsea fan, Josh Hart, also reacted to the disheartening news.

As the news of the European Court of Justice filtered through, fans began to react. And so did Josh Hart. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Here goes this Super League stuff again.” Hart’s tweet captures the sentiment of millions of soccer fans who appreciate the game for its pure enjoyment rather than seeing it solely as a money-making enterprise. The European Super League has faced backlash in the past in April 2021 and will continue to face backlash because of sheer greed.

Within hours of the judgment, A22 announced its plans for the Super League. A22 is a sports development company, which was especially established to assist in the creation of the ESL. A22’s CEO, Bernd Reichart, said, “We have won the right to compete. The UEFA-monopoly is over. Football is FREE. Clubs are now free from the threat of sanction AND free to determine their own futures.” However, many fans, players, and clubs do not hold the same viewpoint.

It would be an understatement to suggest that ESL has faced a severe backlash from the soccer fraternity. Back in 2021, fans from every football club participating in the ESL united to protest against its establishment. The sentiment regarding the Super League hasn’t changed two years later.

Manchester United released a statement which read, “Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions.” Whereas Bayern’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen said, “We have taken note of the judgment of the European Court of Justice. However, this does not change FC Bayern’s and the ECA’s position that such a competition would be an attack on the importance of the national leagues and the structure of European football.”

The Super League collapsed two years ago, not due to any European legal constraints, but rather because fans across the continent revolted against the ESL, rendering the league unsustainable. This sentiment holds true to this very day.
