The stage was set for the most-hyped entry of the season, Victor Wembanyama. The 7’4″ Frenchman came with a ton of expectations and pressure on him. Despite this, he has managed to rise to the occasion and impress everyone. However, the Spurs are in a deep slump currently, suffering 12 back-to-back losses. They will need more than a prodigy to get back on track.

The rookie Wemby is leading the Spurs charts in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks; he has proved himself to be a lethal weapon on both ends of the court. If it looks like he is faltering at times, or not performing as expected, we can cut him some slack and blame it on the fact that it is only his first season in the big league. Skip Bayless seems to agree with this as well.

Skip is hopeful of Victor Wembanyama getting better

The host of the Undisputed show, Skip, brings up Wemby’s numbers; he makes 27.5% of his 3’s. This, according to Skip, is “the worst, pretty significantly the worst in the whole league,” considering his height and wingspan. However, he does acknowledge that Wembanyama is just 19, and it’s too early now to jump to conclusions, as he might only get better. Skip’s reasoning is this: Wemby is just not there yet.

Despite this, he says, “I like the mechanics and I like the falter. I like, it’s all beautiful. Everything he does is beautiful basketball to me.” Although Wemby makes his rookie mistakes and slips up sometimes, Skip’s reaction is nothing short of praise and appreciation, and he likes how things are going with Wemby so far.

Victor needs to expand his skill set

Skip is all for defending Wemby, but he does have some reservations when it comes to the young star not attacking at the interior; instead, he camps at the perimeter, as the analyst puts it. “Why take the threat away from the interior,” Skip points out. He suggests that Wemby might want to consider posting up occasionally.

In contrast, he also mentions how, despite being just 19, Wemby has played a “good bit of professional basketball” against a good deal of ex-NBA stars in France and in Europe, and his early mentality doesn’t fail to shock him. In the 17 games Wemby has played so far in the season, he has averaged 19.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.
