LeBron James is arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. He has broken multiple records and set new milestones throughout his Hall of Fame career. However, one of the biggest accomplishments of his career came last season, exactly one year ago. February 7 marks the 1-year Anniversary of King James breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record to become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader.
On the 1st anniversary of LeBron’s special day, his wife Savannah celebrated his historic achievement by sharing the record-breaking shot on her Instagram story. She also added a ‘Crown’ emoji with the post to honor her husband. LeBron surpassed Kareem’s 38,387 career points last year during a game against the OKC Thunder. King James hit a smooth fadeaway jumper in the third quarter for his 38,388th point and etched his name in the history books. The game was paused to celebrate LeBron’s accomplishment, and the moment was topped off by Kareem passing the ball to King James.

Kareem held the scoring record for 39 years before LeBron broke it last year. Although LeBron became the all-time leading scorer on this day last year, the night ended in agony for him. After LeBron hit his 38,388th point and received a celebratory ceremony, the Lakers lost all momentum and ended up losing the game 133-130. LeBron scored 38 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists to cap off his historic achievement.

LeBron’s scoring record might be his greatest career achievement
Even though LeBron is a 4-time Champion and a 20-time All-Star, his scoring record might go down as his greatest achievement. The record is a testament to LeBron’s longevity and how dominant he has been for over two decades. King James has already reached 39,797 career points only 1 year after breaking Kareem’s record. He is also on track to become the only NBA player in history to score 40,000 points. With the way LeBron is playing at age 39, he can stay productive for at least 4-5 more years. That means he can easily reach at least 44-45,000 points before deciding to hang his boots.
While LeBron’s 4 rings and 20 All-Star selections are achievable milestones, his scoring record might live on forever. Even if LeBron retired today, a player will have to average over 24 points per game for 20 seasons to break LeBron’s record. A player will need to be one of the greatest scorers from the start of his NBA career and be lucky enough to stay healthy for over two decades to even come close to LeBron’s record.
