He then decided to graduate early from high school and start his college career at Memphis. However, his freshman year at Memphis was marred by injuries, and he fell sharply in NBA draft projections.
Undeterred by the setbacks, Bates transferred to his hometown team in Eastern Michigan for his sophomore season. His performance improved significantly, and he was finally putting up superstar figures, averaging 20.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game.?
His perseverance paid off when he was drafted with the 49th pick in the 2023 NBA draft by LeBron ex team the Cavaliers.
