Warriors Locker Room: Glued to Their Phones, Pinching Reality of NBA Trade Deadline Hits Stephen Curry’s Pack

Either Steve Kerr is missing the big picture or he isn’t giving us one. The NBA trade deadline ends at midnight on February 8, 2024. Until then, players and fans alike sitting in suspense. The Golden State Warriors are the looming subjects of the trade rumor mill. Names are thrown, and some are discounted. Apparently, the tension is even getting to the Dubs’ locker room.

“Everyone will be checking our phone until the deadline is over,” said Kevon Looney, one of the rumored trade chips. “You never know. We know the business. We know we don’t have the best record.” Thursday is significant as Kobe Bryant’s statue will be unveiled at 3:30 ahead of the Lakers-Nuggets game. As much as Mamba Legacy is a dominant topic, the pros can’t relax until midnight.

Many in the Warriors organization are downplaying the anxiety Dub Nation is going through. “We know there is a lot of trade noise, but I haven’t heard a lot of chatter about it in the locker room,” Looney said. “I don’t think we’re nervous. I don’t think it’s bothering us. I actually think we’re starting to play better.”

Kerr is seemingly the least tense about potential trades while his team is underwhelming and stuck in 11th place. Before the Warriors won 127-104 against the 76ers on Wednesday, he said, “I feel like this group can do something special, ” and added, “If we don’t do anything tomorrow, we feel like we have a good group we can push with.” He believes the current roster’s chemistry is good enough and they don’t need to make a trade.

Despite his attempts, he’s not been very reassuring. The Bay Area team needs to move past .500 or change is under order. Previously, Shams Charania claimed that the Warriors’ war room was considering moving two All-Star swing pieces. While there was no confirmation, most speculated Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson are the likely names. In fact, Charania said, “everyone but [Stephen Curry] is on the table.” 

The tides are changing for the Dubs

Charania’s latest insider report is that the team doesn’t have “anything on the table that really moves the needle.” That roughly means that the front office has not made a breakthrough in negotiations that would make them part with their Hall of Fame talent. But discussions move much faster on the deadline.

Klay Thompson, currently putting up disappointing numbers, dismissed all rumors, saying, “I don’t partake in NBA discourse.” He also implied that he wanted to stay in the Bay Area longer.

Meanwhile, Dallas and Milwaukee are reportedly keen on Wiggins. However, Kerr’s new front-court strategy snapped him to lead the team with 21 points against the Sixers and projected Jonathan Kuminga as a backup. If he keeps it up, the Warriors might retain this roster and get back to the drawing board in the summer.
