A showdown is unfolding between the New York Knicks and the Toronto Raptors. Even though it can be called an ‘on-court’ battle, it has taken a detour into the world of litigation. Early in the 2023 off-season, the Knicks filed a lawsuit against the Raptors and several coaches, alleging misappropriation of proprietary information. As per Knicks, Ikechukwu Azotam, Raptors’ assistant player development coach and head of video, utilized his position with the Knicks (held from 2020-23) to steal crucial material, including play frequency reports, 2022-23 season prep essentials, video scouting files, and other assets.

In response, the Raptors filed a motion in October, claiming it to be baseless, and a public relations stunt. In doing so, the Raptors acknowledge that Azotam used his Knicks credentials to access certain files. However, they argued that access to certain information comes with his credentials with the Raptors, as part of the assets for his role.

Amid the legal battle with the New York Knicks, Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković confidently asserted that he harbors no concerns, and awaits the truth to unfold. Stefan Bondy, a journalist with the New York Post, reported Darko’s stance on the lawsuit. Bondy quoted Darko, “We explained what happened or what did not happen. I know who I am, I know my integrity, I know who I represent. …I’m really looking forward for this to be solved and everybody to find out the truth. I’ve got nothing to worry about.”

Within the legal battleground, the Knicks have also filed court documents that contested the involvement of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in mediating the situation.

The Knicks allege that Azotam engaged in the accused activities to support the rookie coach in his role. Furthermore, the Knicks also assert that there is involvement of multiple more names in the theft. Additionally, NYK thinks that by channeling proprietary information, the Raptors aim to gain an advantage in orchestrating, planning, and structuring the new coaching and video operations staff.
