The Philadelphia 76ers have managed to stay afloat despite missing their superstar, Joel Embiid, due to a knee injury. They improved to a 35-25 record after beating the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. The Sixers look to continue their hot streak tonight as they prepare to face the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center.

Unfortunately, the Sixers will be at a huge disadvantage because their All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey will not play in tonight’s game. He has reportedly been diagnosed with a mild concussion and has been ruled out of the Nets clash.

Maxey’s concussion is a result of what happened in the last game against the Mavs. During the third quarter of Sunday’s game, the back of Maxey’s head collided with Derrick Jones Jr.’s shin after he slipped during a spin move. Tyrese immediately held the back of his head in pain and left the game. He was examined by the team physicians and was cleared to return to the floor a few minutes later. Maxey was also assessed after the game and showed no visible symptoms. However, he started showing concussion-like symptoms in the next few hours and was eventually diagnosed with a mild concussion.

That is a massive blow for the Sixers, who are already missing Joel Embiid due to a long-term knee injury. Maxey has been their best player since Embiid got sidelined. He has turned into a superstar for the Sixers this season, averaging 26 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.7 rebounds. The Sixers hope for Maxey’s quick recovery because they cannot afford to lose another superstar and fall further in the standings.

Can the Sixers still make an impact in the playoffs?

Tyrese Maxey’s injury has raised massive concerns for the 76ers. The severity of Maxey’s concussion is unknown, and it is still uncertain when he will return to action. The Sixers are on a time crunch and every win matters for them. They are currently 5th in the Eastern Conference standings and need to hold on to that spot until Joel Embiid returns. According to ESPN’s Katie George, Embiid has “started on-court workouts and began lifting 100 percent of the weight he lifted prior to the injury.” So, it is likely that the reigning MVP will be back in the lineup soon.

Embiid has been out with a knee injury since January 30. The Sixers have somehow managed to go 6-8 since Embiid got injured. Even though it does not look like a great record, the Sixers have done a decent job without their best scorer. And most of it has been because of Tyrese Maxey’s incredible performance. If Embiid and Maxey return soon and play how they were playing before the injury, the Sixers can still make a deep run in the playoffs.
