2 Years Before Separation From Stephen Curry’s Father, Mother Sonya Revealed Harsh Truth About Parenting: “Never Really Strived To Be My Children’s Friends”

Stephen Curry revolutionized the basketball landscape with his unreal three-point shooting ability. The 35-year-old has reached this threshold with unwavering determination, grit, and discipline. And Curry’s mother had a big role in instilling all these values in the basketball prodigy. Sonya Curry, being a former volleyball player, was all too familiar with the importance of these qualities. However, Stephen Curry is not the only one to inherit the athletic genes from his parents. Sonya and Dell Curry are parents to three athletic kids: Stephen, Seth, and Sydel Curry. Seth Curry, following in the footsteps of his brother and father, has made a name for himself in the NBA. Sydel Curry-Lee, also a former volleyball player like her mother, has established herself as a successful YouTuber.

Their prosperity in their respective fields is not just because of their own hard work, but also because of the values their mother had always tried to inculcate in them. However, life has not always been a bed of roses for Sonya Curry. After facing a lot of hardships growing up, life tested her again when she went through a divorce with her long-time husband, Dell Curry. However, just two years before the separation, Sonya Curry had opened up about the harsh reality of parenting.

Sonya Curry reveals the harsh reality of parenting

During an appearance on Sydel Curry’s YouTube channel, the mother-daughter duo sat down, talking about many things. They also answered a few questions relating to dating, mental health, skincare, and more. While speaking about their relationship growing up, Sydel Curry revealed they had a lot of disagreements.

To which Sonya Curry had the perfect response, “I think we’re close. I think as a parent and growing up, I never really strived to be my children’s friends. I really wanted to be a parent and to raise them; and I think now as we’ve gotten older, and she’s now an adult I’m less of a parent and trying to just transition into a different kind of role which I don’t really know what that role is right now. But just to kind of be not really her friend but her mom-friend.

However, two years after this revelation, Stephen Curry’s parents decided to call it quits. After being together for 33 years, the couple went through a messy public divorce. Both parties accused each other of unfaithful behavior. However, that did not stop them from fulfilling their responsibilities as parents. They both attended their son’s games separately and were adamant about not letting their divorce affect their children.

Opening up about the situation, Stephen Curry said, “‘Y’all effed this up’, I could have that approach. But it’s going to be an acknowledgment of both of y’all in terms of how y’all raised me. The calmness I have in myself is because of y’all”.
