The WNBA Commissioner’s Cup is more than just a basketball competition; it provides a forum for altruism and significant change. Social Justice Council, a branch of the WNBA, places a focus on women’s health advocacy in these underserved communities. They lead the third iteration of this in-season competition.

For this year, the Las Vegas Aces has partnered with NAMI Southern Nevada, a non-profit organization that will reap donations from WNBA. And with the final mere hours away, Kelsey Plum was passionate while talking about mental health in a recent interview.

The WNBA Commissioner’s Cup combines competitive sports with a deep dedication to improving communities. They lay special emphasis on Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ communities. Each team playing for the Commissioner’s Cup chooses a charity to represent. And the Aces has partnered up with NAMI Southern Nevada, a mental health non-profit organization. The final game will go down on August 15, 2023.

Meanwhile, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young recently appeared in an interview before the finals. Plum talked passionately about mental health.

She said,We felt like you know mental illness is something that touches everyone“.

Plum revealed how they have managed to raise an incredible $18,500 so far for the cause of mental health awareness. If they are victorious in the finals, they win an additional $10,000. This would greatly increase the resources available for people dealing with mental health problems.

She continued, “And you know we know how much mental illness is uh affects not just um you know some people but everyone in their daily lives. So, um, you know our team has been passionate about that so proud to be able to represent that well and hopefully, we can finish that strong.”

The Ace will be playing against the New York Liberty on Tuesday for the finals, where Plum and Young will face Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart.

How do the donations work?

Throughout the Commissioner?s Cup competition, all 12 WNBA teams played in support of a charity of their choice. The league donated $2,000 to a team?s charity for the Cup wins and $500 for Cup losses. A significant monetary contribution was tied to each game’s result throughout the tournament, which ran from May 19 to July 12. It featured 60 games pitting conference rivals against one another.

The WNBA promised to pay $2,000 to the winning team’s partner organization for women’s health. And as for the losing team’s partner organization, it would be $500. This strategy gave each game an obvious goal. And every victory improved both the team’s standing and the ability of the chosen organization to effect change. And no the Aces will play against the New York Liberty for the ultimate showdown. It’ll go down at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Michelob Ultra Arena.
