The drama around the future of Kyrie Irving at the Dallas Mavericks reached an all-time high some times back. There were reports during that period stating that he wanted to recruit LeBron James to the Mavericks. As that news reached the NBA fans, two of them got into Twitter barbs with Irving.
It’s been two months since that episode, but Irving is still far from forgetting about it. Uncle Drew recently reopened that chapter expressing his desire to personally take revenge.
It all started with LeBron James

While there were doubts over Irving’s future at Dallas, The Athletic reported he was actively attempting to recruit LeBron James, who ended up continuing with Los Angeles Lakers. A majority of NBA fans started mocking Irving on Twitter for this. One such fan was Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports and an avid Boston Celtics fan.
Irving threw a challenge for him tweeting, “If you ever wanna lace ??em up and play ones and earn my respect, instead of always running your mouth, I am here”.
Portnoy, unwilling to back down, accepted it posting, “I’ll beat you 21-17. I’ll back you down in the paint 17 time and shoot 4 jumpers right in your face”.?This went on before the two finally decided on the venue to play out their 1-on-1 challenge.
Phillips Park it is. Good luck with wind. I know you don’t like playing unless everything is dead ass perfect. Then to my parents for knishes, latkes, challah. https://t.co/4wqXkjPZMv

Mike Gunzelman, also known as Gunz Show, covered this story for OutKick soon after it became newsworthy. Irving was quick to call him out for that and ended up challenging him to a 1-on-1 too. Mike stepped back from it, expressing his desire to compete with the one-time NBA champion only in NBA 2K18. As Irving felt disrespected, he tweeted, “You gotta realize who you?re f***ing with. Choose your rivals wisely”.
After two and a 3-year contract with Dallas Mavericks later, Irving is far from forgetting this series of incidents. On his Twitch stream, he mentioned his willingness to still face both Dave and Mike.?”I have no personal issues w/them?I’m gonna use these guys as examples,” he highlighted while talking about his way of dealing with people throwing him under the bus.
Would it come to reality?

What Dave said at that moment might have been caused by his admiration towards the Celtics. His departure from that franchise was not a sweet one and it upset the fans. They felt betrayed as they had high hopes for him. So, watching him trying to potentially recruit LeBron James for his new franchise might have frustrated Portnoy and caused him to lash out.
Mike Gunzelman’s name got dragged into this in the heat of the moment. He has been clear with his intent of not wanting to go against Irving on the court since the beginning. Due to all these and despite Irving’s desire, the matchup looks unlikely.
