“Trying to Win for the Country”: RJ Barrett Gets Patriotic After Sinking the Cavaliers on Homecoming

RJ Barrett made his country proud with his homecoming performance. The 23-year-old forward not only managed to attain glory for the Raptors but also made his fellow Toronto citizens proud. The former Big Apple star got traded to the Raptors just before New Year’s and in his debut performance, managed to assert dominance against the strong team of the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, his homecoming night was not only special due to his performance, but it also was an emotional win for “We the North.”

The love and support Barrett received for his debut match was heartwarming. He even got a little emotional after the warm reception of the Raptors and spoke about how “special” this win was for him in the post-match interview.

RJ Barrett gets emotional after fans shower him with love

RJ Barrett has been a member of the New York Knicks since his debut in the NBA. However, they traded the Canadian athlete to his local team, the Toronto Raptors, after he aided them for four years. This was not just an incredible moment for him, but it was also an emotional one for Raptors’ fans. A sellout audience of 19,800 supporters came to watch their hometown talent, which made Barrett’s homecoming night truly unforgettable. Barrett showed his appreciation for the fans during his post-match interview after seeing their love and affection.

He said, “It meant a lot as the hometown kid coming in trying to get a win for the fans, trying to win for the country. This was special. Way better than any other time I’ve played here. This was a special one that I’ll always appreciate.” Barrett managed to score 19 points and get 9 rebounds in his debut. He just missed a double-double on his debut but proved to be an incredible addition to the Raptors squad. However, the win against the Cavs was no cakewalk for the Raptors.

A close call for the Raptors

The Raptors had to hold off a late comeback attempt by the tough Cleveland Cavaliers. However, because of several unforced mistakes, the Cavs slipped in the last minutes of the game and failed to win against the Raptors. Although the Raptors won, there were many areas for improvement, and most notably in their defense.

The team recognizes the need to improve its defense to overcome the difficulties provided by their Eastern Conference opponents. Nonetheless, the Raptors won thanks to their strong and physical play, as well as the incredible performances by Barrett and Quickley.
