Steve Kerr Pulls Merit Card on Andrew Wiggins Amid Struggle: “Whoever is Playing the Best”

Following the series of poor games, the Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr took the affairs into serious consideration. Apart from Stephen Curry’s contribution in the starting line-up, there wasn’t any help from Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson in the initial games. Kerr held the same line-up, more or less, for over 20 games and later decided to bench Wiggins, considering the damage. Meanwhile, the change in the line-up has come out fruitful for the Dubs, as they are back with a 2-game winning streak. Now, Kerr opened up on who will play at the end of the game.

While Steph generated MVP numbers, a lot was expected from Klay and Wiggins from their end to keep the Dubs on the driving seat. However, the team heavily relied on their bench players, as the duo weren’t delivering at the top. Even though China Klay produced a decent amount of points, Wiggins wasn’t even close. It eventually pushed Kerr to bench Wiggins and bring up Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski.

Following the massive change in the starting line-up, it reflected on the result of the game. Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski delivered their best and eventually pushed Andrew Wiggins to come out on top. Interestingly, in the last game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the 28-year-old outscored Stephen Curry with his 25 points.

However, the focus has now shifted to the line-up that will take the court in the final minutes of the game. And Steve Kerr has an interesting take on it.

Ahead of the game against the Boston Celtics, Steve Kerr took questions from the press, and one of the reporters asked about the usage of Wiggins in the final minutes of the Blazers game while he didn’t play during the previous games. Kerr pulled out a merit card, and said, “Last game Wiggs was having a great game, so I left him… so for me, whoever is playing the best is going to be out there.”

He also spoke about how Kuminga took the spot in the final minutes whenever he performed well on that night.

While Wiggins proved his class in the last game, will Kerr put him back in the starting line-up? Or will he trust his young guns at the top?

The star came into the league as the #1 pick of the 2014 draft and played for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Six years into the season, the Warriors roped him in the 2019-20 season and he played a crucial role in the 2022 championship.

However, after that, the star didn’t impress the NBA world and eventually got pushed onto the bench. Now that he proved himself in the last game, there are fewer chances of him getting back on the starting line-up as Kerr would test his youngsters on the top.

Meanwhile, a recent report revealed that Wiggins could miss the game as he was kept under ‘questionables’ following an illness.
