Steve Kerr joined the Golden State Warriors in 2014, kickstarting a decade-long of dominance. Under his leadership, the Warriors reached 6 NBA finals, winning 4 of them. Moreover, he orchestrated the 73-9 season record in 2015-16, eclipsing the iconic 72-10 stretch by the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96 (in which Kerr played alongside Jordan and Pippen). Adding to his accolades, recently, Kerr made history by agreeing to a record-breaking coaching deal. The Warriors offered Kerr a two-year, $35 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid coach in NBA history.

The move highlights the Warriors’ steadfast belief in Steve Kerr, even during a disappointing season. Joe Lacob, the team’s owner, resonated the same sentiment in a recent interview. While talking about the extension, Lacob claimed that Kerr very much deserves it. Moreover, highlighting the 10 years of his tenure, Lacob accentuates the Warriors’ admiration for continuity. According to Joe, Kerr’s resume and unwavering commitment to the franchise automatically “commanded a big number.”

Even though Lacob’s applauding comments came fluidly in the interview, the figures in Kerr’s extension were not guaranteed from the start. The agreement materialized after months of talks and negotiation between Kerr’s agents and the Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Kerr’s new contract overshadows Erik Spoelstra and Miami Heat‘s deal, an 8-year extension commitment worth $120 million to retain the coach who joined them in 2008. Erik will bag an annual pay of $15 million while Kerr is slated for $17.5 million per year. Interestingly, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich makes more than Steve Kerr annually. However, it is worth noting that Pop operates on more grounds than just the coach for the franchise. He is also the team’s president, indicating that his coaching compensation rests below Kerr’s.

Steve Kerr’s contract will end parallelly to Stephen Curry

Steve Kerr, before the extension, was under a contract set to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season. However, he will now remain with the franchise until the 2025-26 campaign. Interestingly, Steve Kerr’s extended future with the franchise lines up with Stephen Curry, who holds a $215 million max extension until the 2025 season.

As of now, there is no official word on whether the synchronization of their contracts is a coincidence or intentional. However, it is certain that as the date nears, it will spark numerous narratives, potentially in light of changing league dynamics.

Moreover, Draymond Green is slated to be with the Warriors till the 2026-27 season. However, he has a player option for the last year, enabling him to opt for an early exit if situations demand.
