The Los Angeles Lakers are about to add another player onto their roster. Following a lackluster trade deadline where the Lakers failed to secure any significant trades, they have now acquired former Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie in the buyout market. The deal is still subject to Dinwiddie clearing his waivers with the Toronto Raptors. However, all things point towards the Lakers, adding a key player into their rotation.

Spencer Dinwiddie’s career before the NBA

Spencer Dinwiddie, born on April 6th, 1993, in Los Angeles, began his basketball journey at William Howard Taft High School. Dinwiddie quickly became the standout player of the high school basketball program, with several D1 colleges looking to acquire his services. However, he chose to join the Colorado Buffaloes. In three seasons with the Buffaloes, Dinwiddie averaged 13 points and 2.6 assists per game.

During his sophomore season, he even earned first-team all-conference honors in the Pac-12 in 2013. However, Spencer missed most of the junior year due to an ACL injury. But despite sitting out most of the season due to his ACL injury, Dinwiddie declared for the 2014 NBA draft.

The Detroit Pistons selected Dinwiddie with the 38th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Dinwiddie spent two seasons with the Pistons, averaging 4.5 points in 46 games. After his stint with the Pistons, Dinwiddie played for the Brooklyn Nets for five seasons, where he posted averages of 14.2 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.1 rebounds across 348 games.

However, Dinwiddie played his best basketball for the Dallas Mavericks during his two season stint. He averaged 17.1 points, 4.9 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 76 games for the Mavs. But on the 2023 trade deadline, the Mavs traded him back to the Nets in exchange for Kyrie Irving. Apart from representing the Nets, Mavs and Pistons, Dinwiddie also had short stints with the Chicago Bulls (5 games) and the Washington Wizards (44 games).

Over his ten-year NBA career, Dinwiddie has shot 33.1% from downtown. During the 2022-23 season with the Mavericks, Dinwiddie showcased his best three-point shooting performance, hitting 40.5% of his shots from beyond the arc.
