The Golden State Warriors are entering the 2023-24 season with high hopes of winning a championship once again. In this, Steve Kerr will be playing a very important role. Since taking over as the head coach in 2014, Kerr has guided the Warriors to four NBA championships, solidifying their status as one of the league’s premier franchises.

As the regular season begins, he will be entering the final year of his contract and the basketball world eagerly awaits news of a possible contract extension for the 58-year-old coach.

In a recent press conference before the opening match against the Los Angeles Lakers, Steve Kerr addressed the topic of his contract extension. He refused to divulge any details saying, “I just prefer not to talk about contracts and stuff. I guess it’s better that way.” With an extremely important match coming up, it is understandable that he does not want the focus to be on it.

Kerr also went further to emphasize his strong relationship with the Warriors’ front office and owner, Joe Lacob. He stated, “There is no deadline for the extension. We can do the contract extension in the last days of the season. But, you know. I’m not gonna get it in any details.” This shows them mutual confidence and trust the two entities share with each other.

With an exceptionally talented roster in his care, Kerr will be hoping to win the title again. And the campaign starts today against the Phoenix Suns and will provide an early litmus test of their championship aspirations.

The almost 10 year journey of Steve Kerr

Steve began his journey in the NBA in 1988 as a point guard for the Phoenix Suns. After playing for close to 14 years with multiple teams, he switched to coaching in 2014. He has also been coaching the United States basketball team since 2021.

All his players have rendered high praise for the ‘most successful coach in NBA’. “He just brought his humility, his consistency and his empathy for people,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area. “That’s a big part of his career and just understanding what it takes to be an NBA player, all the different things that have to go right within an organization to put yourselves in position to be successful.

Warriors’ shooting guard, Klay Thompson also added, “Steve just has a brilliant mind for the game, he’s an ultra competitor which we all respect. I’ve greatly enjoyed playing for Steve and he’s a shooter, he knows what the rhythm of a shooter takes. He’s really helped my game flourish.”
