After an underwhelming 2022-23 season, ideally, the Golden State Warriors should have invested in a young offensive spearhead. On the contrary, the management went with the veteran point guard Chris Paul in the offseason, shocking the Dub Nation. Eventually, the shock turned into a question. Where will CP3 fit in the line-up? Steve Kerr found the solution and made him the leader of the second unit, making him come off the bench for the first time in his career. But, the important question is, is it worth it for the Dubs? Considering the losing streak.
In the initial six games, the Warriors looked unstoppable, producing a 5-game winning streak. However, looking into the specifics of the games, it was Stephen Curry and second-unit stars who helped the side take home the win. Soon after those games, Steph’s contribution didn’t have any effect on the team without any support, as Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins were all over the place.

The Warriors’ core three stepped into their 12th season together. Even though the Warriors are the most successful NBA team in the decade, winning 4 trophies, things look bleak for the team. Stephen Curry started the season as a strong MVP contender, averaging close to 30 points. Meanwhile, Klay Thompson struggled to find buckets, shooting just about 40% and Draymond Green had availability issues.
The core three are expected to play in the Dubs threads till the end of their career and maybe the team would also want the same. To save the franchise, keeping the upcoming seasons and qualifying for the playoffs in mind, they need to rope in a strong offense contender. Keeping the core three aside, the management needs to free up the purse size to cash in the trade deadline. The best available option could be trading out Chris Paul.
The Warriors signed in CP3 for a four-year contract worth $120 million with an average of $30 million per season. If the Warriors could send out Paul for $23.3 million, it would reduce the Warriors’ payroll by $7.5 million. This will, in turn, reduce their tax burden by $50 million, reported Hoops Hype.

On top of it, Paul is currently suffering from leg-nerve contusion and could be unavailable for the coming games.
Chris Paul’s role so far
After taking up the leadership role of the second unit, CP3 has carried out the job of a facilitator. The Warriors consisting of Moses Moody, Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski and Dario Saric organically contribute to the offense, leaving Paul with the luxury of playing without pressure. During the Dubs’ 5-game winning streak, Steve Kerr spoke about CP3. He said, “He is a Hall of Famer… It changes everything, when you can start a game off with Steph Curry and then bring Chris with great second unit.”
