Steven Adams has been ruled out for the entire season, making it tough for the Memphis Grizzlies. The New Zealander injured his knee back in January, resulting in missing the remaining 2022-23 season. The knee operation was announced because the ongoing rehab did not work out for him.

The 6’11 defender plays a crucial role for the Grizzles. Though his absence is a major setback, the Grizzles are trying other combinations to cover for it.

A former basketball player and renowned NBA writer shares his views in the light of recent events. He further discusses who can fit into Adam’s shoes.

A Big Role to Play For ‘JJJ’

Marc J. Spears while speaking to ‘NBA on ESPN’ opened up on how Jaren Jackson Jr. can play a crucial role in Adam’s absence. Spears describes how Kenny Lofton Jr and Zach Randolph 2.0 have the ability, but cannot prove themselves useful in this situation.

“We haven’t seen him when it matters the most, and I love the kid but now we have to keep that same energy that we have for Anthony Davis. We have to keep that for Jaren Jackson Jr,” said Spears. He claimed that a young JJJ can be as versatile as Lakers star Anthony Davis.

Spears went ahead to applaud JJJ’s ability to stretch the floor. It fetched him the most awaited Defensive Player of the Year award. He says that JJJ has to step up and play in five different positions, including in the offense. “I’m not saying he can’t but now the pressure is a little bit more on him.”

Adams’ contribution to the Grizzles is much more than his stats portray. He acts as a top rebounder and tussles with big names single-handedly. ‘The Strongest Man in the NBA’ title is not just for nothing.
