Sunday night’s clash between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Minnesota Timberwolves was a classic case of ‘what goes around comes around’. In a video circulated online, Russell Westbrook was spotted hysterically trolling Rudy Gobert for air-balling his free throw attempts. After Gobert missed his first free throw attempt, Westbrook turned away from the basket and asked fans sitting nearby to record the second attempt. When the fan told him that he missed the second attempt as well, Brodie was left in stitches at the T-Wolves center’s failure to convert his attempts from the charity stripe.

This did not age well, as the tables took a dramatic turn in the end. The Frenchman had the last laugh by sinking two crucial foul shots, ultimately sealing a 109–105 victory for Minnesota. In an ironic twist, Westbrook was unable to rise to the occasion when it mattered most and caught flak for trolling Gobert earlier.

The basketball gods weren’t too pleased with Westbrook’s mockery of Rudy Gobert, as evidenced by his smoked layup in the crucial fourth quarter. With a few seconds left on the clock and the Clippers trailing by four points, Westbrook missed a wide-open layup. A fan was quick to post the footage online in response to the earlier video, accompanied by the caption, “oh dear.”

To add insult to injury, it was Westbrook fouling Gobert with 70 seconds remaining that tilted the scales further in favor of the Wolves. The 31-year-old capitalized on both free throws this time. Subsequently, he was fouled again, but he adeptly converted both attempts this time as well. Gobert, who started the game with a 1-of-6 performance at the free-throw line, concluded the night at 7 of 14 from the charity stripe, with six of them coming in clutch time. The irony of Westbrook’s earlier mockery was starkly evident in the game’s decisive moments.

The T-Wolves exact their revenge

Nevertheless, Westbrook showcased a commendable performance in the fourth quarter, nearly steering the Clippers to a comeback with 10 of his 12 points coming in that crucial period. Impressively, he converted all four of his foul shots and contributed significantly with 13 assists and 8 rebounds in a losing effort. Despite Westbrook’s late-game push, the lackluster performances from Paul George and James Harden proved detrimental. Harden managed 14 points, shooting 4-14 from the field, while PG13 struggled with 16 points on a 5-19 shooting performance.
