In the past few seasons, Dillon Brooks has become one of the most talked about young stars in the NBA. But most of the recognition is not because of his basketball skills. Instead, he has popularized himself as the new “villain” of the league, who constantly tries to agitate his opponents on the court with his unusual antics. That has garnered Brooks a bad reputation in the NBA World.

Houston Rockets sideline reporter Vanessa Richardson was recently a guest on The Rally. During the show, Richardson revealed what it is like to cover the NBA’s “Biggest Antagonist” Dillon Brooks. According to her, Dillon is one of the nicest guys in the league. “It is as he says, his words not mine, truly a villain persona.” Richardson said. It came as a shock to everyone that the Houston Rockets guard is not really what he portrays to the media. Brooks puts on a villain persona on the court to get under his opponents’ skin and get an edge over them during games.

Vanessa also complemented Brooks for being a great father and a veteran presence in the Rockets locker room. Brooks joined the Houston Rockets after he signed a 4-year $80 million deal last summer. He became a great addition to the young Rockets squad and has been a key contributor to their success this season. Brooks is averaging 13.7 points and 3.5 rebounds, but his contribution goes beyond the stat sheet. He has helped his young teammates get better defensively and impact the game.

Brooks has fully accepted his “villain” role in the league, and there are times when the persona works for him. But there are also times when it backfires.

The consequences of nawaBrooks’ “villain” persona

Dillon Brooks faced the consequences of embracing his NBA “villain” persona last season. He was one of the rising stars in Memphis for the last six years and helped them become title contenders. But Brooks’ contribution to the franchise became irrelevant after he poked LeBron James during the first round of the playoffs. After a Game 2 win in the 2023 playoffs, Brooks disrespected LeBron by calling him “old”. His trash-talk backfired as LeBron James and Co. eliminated the Grizzlies in 6 games.

The NBA world criticized Brooks for his actions. Even Memphis Grizzlies fans blamed him for costing them the series. The Grizzlies eventually traded him, putting an end to the Dillon Brooks saga in Memphis. As long as Brooks’ persona does not backfire on the Houston Rockets like the Grizzlies, he will continue to be a loved star in H-Town.
