Stephen Curry has transformed the game. And so, he is in line to reap the rewards. With his impeccable 3-point shooting skills, he has compelled other players in the NBA to adapt to his style to counter him. Besides basketball, however, Curry and his family love to give back to their community for their growth and progress. So, to honor the Golden State Warriors guard, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has chosen to rename an I-77 junction.

This choice, however, has sparked a debate, with one voter against this decision, raising concerns about the unity necessary for such a rebranding. This government official feels like the 4x NBA champion has not done enough for North Carolina.

To give tribute to Stephen Curry, a decision has been passed to rename the Interstate 77 junction at Griffith Street. Due to a single vote, however, this decision has not yet been passed. While the Town of Davidson commissioners voted in support of the name, the NCDOT’s current policy requires a unanimous decision for a naming petition to continue.

Due to Tracy Brandon, a member of the council who voiced their opinion on this decision, there appears to be an imbalance between Davidson College and the surrounding community. “When it comes to naming things, in the west Davidson community it’s important that we recognize the heritage of people that made contributions to the town, and not just the college,” said the official.

“That’s one of the concerns I have. There’s a disconnect between Davidson College and the town. There are some efforts being made to bring the two together,” they added.

Due to Curry, Davidson College is renowned all over the world today. Besides his basketball prowess, Curry is also known for his philanthropy. He helps run multiple foundations to uplift those in need, more so by providing the necessities for their well-being. He even collaborated with Under Armour to give back to his town of Charlotte with a 7-figure amount.

The 35-year-old point guard made an undisclosed “7-figure” contribution to his hometown for the renovation of the Carole Hoefener Center. This place holds a special place in the hearts of Steph and his brother Seth Curry, a place where the two first learned to play basketball.

With the help of Under Armour and Chase Bank, they are renovating the buildings, developing a kitchen for healthy food, and providing areas for education and interaction between communities.

Despite Curry’s efforts to uplift his community, however, a government officer feels he hasn’t done enough for North Carolina. So, as the debates continue, the differing viewpoints reflect how difficult it is to assess a public figure’s contributions to their community.
