The Los Angeles Clippers made light work of the Detroit Pistons tonight. Kawhi Leonard and Co. dominated the bottom-seeded team in the Eastern Conference for a statement 112-106 win. Paul George stole the show with his incredible 33-point performance. However, PG’s post-game comments regarding his pending contract extension with the Clippers raised some concerns.

Paul George is in the 3rd year of his 4-year $176 million contract with the Clippers. He can decline the player option for next season and become a free agent after the end of this season. After tonight’s win against the Pistons, PG was asked if the goal for him and the Clippers was to reach an extension this season.

The Clippers superstar subtly replied, “That’s the goal.” He was again asked if there was any more update on the matter. PG decided to repeat his previous response with a smirk on his face. “That’s the goal.”

The 9-time All-Star’s dubious update regarding his Clippers’ future left the NBA World in a frenzy. Paul George joined the Clippers in the summer of 2019 to join forces with Kawhi Leonard. PG is in his 5th year with the Clippers and arguably playing the best basketball of his entire tenure. He has been balling out all season, averaging 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.

Although his numbers are lower than his last three seasons, they are great, considering he is playing alongside 3 future Hall of Famers this year. PG has helped the Clippers rank 2nd in the Western Conference standings with a 35-16 record. And his future might depend on how far the Clippers go this season.

Can Paul George finally bring a championship to LA?

The superstar duo has been incredibly injury-prone since moving to LA. Paul missed a total of 139 games in the last four seasons with the Clippers due to multiple injuries. However, this season has been different for Kawhi and PG.

Paul George has already played 48 games this season and has been available for the majority of the season. Kawhi has also stayed healthy for most games and has been the best player on the Clippers squad. This season might be PG and Kawhi’s best chance to bring a championship to LA.

They are playing great and have the support of former MVPs James Harden and Russell Westbrook. If the Clippers win the title this season, that could even lead PG to sign a contract extension to continue their incredible run.
