Stephen Curry has achieved the greatest pinnacles of success but he too had a humble beginning. Although the 2-time MVP became the heartthrob of the Bay Area, he originally came from a city 2,698.2 miles away. This is where the Curry brothers developed an interest in basketball which eventually led to thriving careers in the NBA. However, their success did not come easy.

Stephen Curry has surpassed several NBA greats to reach the legendary status he has. One such player was his own father. Curry followed his father’s footsteps into the NBA but elevated to a different level since his arrival. But his initial days in his father’s franchise’s home proved difficult for both Curry and his mother, Sonya.

Before Stephen Curry, it was his father, Dell Curry that lit up the NBA with his shooting from beyond the arc. The Charlotte Hornets legend retired as the team’s leader in three-pointers made, much like his son, Stephen. However, his playing days with the franchise caused struggles for his son and his ex-wife, Sonya.

Sonya struggled for 30 years in Stephen Curry’s hometown, Charlotte. She revealed this very experience in a recent appearance on the Got It From My Momma podcast. “We moved a lot in Charlotte, we lived there for 10 years, I mean 30 years and I think we moved 12 times in 30 years in the same city.” she claimed.

Sonya revealed a difficult period in Stephen Curry and the family’s life over 3 decades. However, since the Golden State Warriors drafted Curry in 2009, things have not remained the same. While his family continued to stay in Charlotte, Curry moved to Oakland to render his services to the Warriors and has never looked back.

After the infamous “expansion draft” in 1989, Dell Curry ended up with the Charlotte Hornets, just two years into his NBA career. However, Curry Sr. soon grew into a pivotal piece on the franchise’s roster. He became a force off the bench for the Hornets in their playoff runs in the 1990’s. In fact, he also bagged the Sixth Man of The Year honor in 1994 for his marvelous efforts. He retired as the franchise’s all-time leader in points and three-pointers made before the arrival of Kemba Walker.
