As the 2023-24 NBA regular season nears its final stages, the New York Knicks are gearing up for the playoffs. Revamping their series record last season after a decade-long era of losses, Mitchell Robinson and his team are now looking for yet another victory. With 41 wins and 27 losses this season, the team will also host a first-round playoff. However, Mitchell’s injury is now posing challenges, with many fans wondering if he’ll appear in the upcoming games.
Hurting his ankle during a clash against the Celtics last December, Mitchell Robinson made a quick return to practice, despite undergoing surgery. Explaining the aspects surrounding Robinson’s on-court appearance before the playoffs, Dr. Kirk A. Campbell had a frank discussion with sports anchor Brandon London. Speaking of the 25-year-old center, Brandon asked his guest, “What do team doctors have to see from Mitch Rob in the final stages of his rehab for him to be cleared for game action?”
A sports orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone Orthopedic, Dr. Campbell shared his take on Mitchell’s current dynamics, mentioning, “Very important player for the Knicks, he’s a very very physical player; really great news coming out of Nick’s facilities that he’s there, you know, doing some contact.”

Evidently, Robinson’s injury was followed by in-game tests at the New York Knicks Center, where the medical team mistakenly approved his form. While Mitchell Robinson thought he was ready to re-enter during the second half, he was forced to leave the game within five minutes of playing in the third quarter.
Highlighting the ideal practices in such cases, Dr. Campbell noted, “After surgery, we have to make sure that the players have responded well to being back on the court, right. So he did his conditioning work, now he’s there practicing.”
Mitchell Robinson remains hopeful on playing ahead this season
Undergoing surgery after the Boston game, Mitchell Robinson has been under rest since then, now working on his conditioning. “Going through plays, we’re going to see how he responds during that practice”, Dr. Campbell elaborated, continuing, “More importantly, we’re going to see how he responds after the practice, is there a significant pain? Is there significant swelling? And then, what happens the day after that? Is he able to get back out there?”
In a recent update on his recovery, Mitchell Robinson was spotted changing his focus, working more on the pool than lifting weights. Additionally, he tried another different approach, concentrating on the bike.

With positive probabilities for the playoffs, Knicks fans are now hopeful of his return, a feeling backed by Dr. Campbell. “I’m sure they’re going to slowly ramp him back up to get him back on the court in a safe fashion, hopefully before playoff time”, the sports surgeon emphasized, adding, “He should be able to get back out there.”
With his team playing against the Nuggets on Thursday, Mitchell Robinson was caught in a media exchange, returning to his practice after the surgery. While coach Tom Thibodeau noted his participation in each of the drills, his comeback to the court was still uncertain. As only 10 games remained on his team’s schedule, Mitchell admitted, “I asked (the doctors). They just throw me curveballs.”
