Andre Iguodala, the most versatile of players in the NBA, announced his retirement today. It was an emotional day for everyone, from the Warriors to all the other teams he has played for. Not to mention the friendships he has cultivated in the league.
Iguodala also shines as a father, husband and an entrepreneur. And that’s exactly what he cited as the reason for his retirement. Teenage son and two daughters – it’s a huge responsibility. We cannot fault the 4x NBA champion for wanting to spend more time focusing on his family. But he will forever be grateful to the Warriors.

July 2013 would be the year that changed Andre’s history. That’s not to say his achievements prior were in any way unremarkable. That year, he turned down the Nuggets invitation and joined the Golden State Warriors. In 2015, Iguodala not only won his first ring but also earned the title of NBA Finals MVP.
Speaking about his experience with the Warriors, Andre gets emotional. “No organization has been run like this. And I think it’s a testament to us believing in each other, playing the right way.” His arrival at the Warriors is the prime example of being at the right place at the right time.
His 2015 game was one of his finer moments in the league. Andre was on guard duty to LeBron James and, suffice it to say, he did a splendid job of it. LeBron shot 38.1% from the field when guarded by Andre as compared to 44% with other defenders. Iguodala’s average in that game series was 16.3 points, 4.0 assists and 5.8 rebounds.
Iguodala’s success mantra
The 39-year-old defensive-minded player is a team favourite. The only reason for that is his outlook on the game and the team. He is big on the belief that genuine hard work pays off greatly. And looking at his history, it compels us to believe the same.

Talking to ESPN, Andre says, “If you just go out and do your job and what you’re supposed to do, things will happen the way they’re supposed to happen … got to have faith that things will work out favorably.”
The Pelicans coach, Willie Green, who was also a fellow teammate, gives a perfect account of what makes Andre Iguodala the rare human being/player he is. According to him, Andre has always been mature and does not believe that his years of experience entitle him to anything special. An all-round player, he was ready to give his everything to better his inherent skills, learn new things and then master them.
