Patrick Beverley is among the most liked NBA players today. The newly-turned Buck has his podcast; he is a vocal leader and has all the qualities to be a brilliant role player. But his life wasn’t always so simple. Beverley completely changed his reputation from being a league irritant to a valued presence. Moreover, he had to fight a battle long before the NBA as a tender 15–16 year old.

Not a lot is known about Beverley’s personal life. He only recently opened up about it on his podcast, The Pat Bev Podcast. His father, Patrick Bracy, wasn’t around much during his childhood. As a teenager barely having seen the world, he had to assume the role of being ‘the man’ of the house.

He watched his mother strenuously work multiple jobs just to keep them afloat. Despite all that, he explains why he holds no hatred toward his father.

Patrick Beverley speaks up about the impact of his father

During a recent episode, Beverley told stories about his childhood, in particular the lack of a father figure in his life. See, when he was around 15 years old, Pat Bev didn’t have Bracy or any father figure to guide him and teach him the imperative lessons needed for life. He only had his mother, who was working three jobs.

The desperation bred motivation within Patrick Beverley. As he said on his podcast, it’s thanks to his father’s absence that he had the drive to chase his dreams. His co-host, Rone, noticed Beverley had never spoken about his father before. “I don’t like how he did my mom,” the Bucks guard said, justifying why he has never previously spoken about his father.

Typically, one would think that being absent for the majority of the child’s life would lead to negative and hostile feelings towards the dad. Beverley only saw his father periodically.

Even then, he claims to have no animosity whatsoever toward Patrick Bracy. After turning into a father himself, Beverley understood how difficult it truly is. While he didn’t appreciate Bracy leaving his mother, Lisa Beverley, to fend for herself, he related to his father.

“I understand how hard it is being a dad. So, I’m sympathetic too. You know, as I get older, I understand but no one wants to see their mom working two or three jobs. Mom not there. You got to stay with grandma. And I’m dad now so I understand. I feel like ‘Damn, I wish I was there more’ you know?”

Revealing a conversation with his dad, Beverley said he admitted to feeling “cold and alone every night” while his son was finding his place in the NBA. Bracy even told Pat Bev to shape his kids as he would want to because, no matter what happens, he will always have a place in their lives as a ‘dad’.

Patrick Beverley further credited his mother, Lisa, who single-handedly took care of him by doing all she could. Even to this day, she makes timely appearances at Beverley’s games, cheering him on. His father isn’t one to come into the spotlight. Despite the past, though, Beverley has moved on and doesn’t resent his father.
