Like many streaming services, Paramount+ has been gaining significant viewership. In June, it accounted for 1% of all TV viewing, as officially reported by Nielsen, a company that tracks TV ratings. One reason for its popularity was the hit tv series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The show caught the most viewership, adding up to almost 1 billion minutes of viewing time. However, recent reports suggest that streamers have been the biggest winners in terms of viewership. In fact, the dying industry, which is the traditional TV experience, saw a major push from Nikola Jokic and Denver Nuggets.

Reportedly traditional TV consumption made up 51.4% of all TV viewing in June of this year, down from 63.6% in June of last year. Sports, especially NBA games, are a common reason people watch traditional TV. They continue to contribute to the popularity and existence of cable and broadcast TV.

According to reports, the NBA Finals between the Nikola Jokic-led Denver Nuggets and the Jimmy Butler-led Miami Heat saw a 31.7% increase in sports viewing on broadcast channels.

The decline of an already dying industry

Linear TV, like traditional television, has recently seen a drop in viewership. These days, many viewers choose to view content on billion-dollar streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or YouTube. Of course, because they provide them more freedom over what and when they watch it. Earlier, viewers used to watch shows and movies primarily on the broadcast. But more options are now available to viewers thanks to the growth of internet streaming.

Traditional TV ratings have decreased because of the convenience of streaming services. Viewers can now choose to watch on their own schedules without interruptions. As a result, maintaining an audience for linear TV is difficult.

However, sports will always remain a major source of entertainment for sports fans. And thankfully, the NBA finals have been pushing the ratings as long as they could. While the Joker was anxious to finish the series so he could go home, sports events continued to be a major draw for traditional TV viewers despite the fact that more people are using streaming services to watch TV.
