Prior to their recent matchup against the Warriors, the San Antonio Spurs faced off against the New York Knicks for the second time this season. The Spurs star rookie Victor Wembanyama once again came out on top in leading his team’s offensive effort. While one of his teammates barely managed to cross the 20 points threshold, Wembanyama went ahead and added 40 points, 20 rebounds and 7 assists during the game. The sudden rush of emotions and excitement resulted in an unusual incident during the game, as the French player denied the ball to be taken from Jalen Brunson and ended up throwing it into the stands right as the buzzer sounded. This action resulted in him receiving a fine of $25,000.

Sports Journalist Tom Orsborn recently took to his official X account to highlight Wembanyama’s statement in the aftermath of the same. He quoted the player saying “I remember players being fined for this, but they always threw it in a bad way. I threw it to…please somebody. It’s not like I was trying to hurt anybody.”

The Knicks-Spurs clash saw Jalen Brunson delivering the best performance of his 6-year NBA career. For someone who had been averaging 23.7 points during the previous 3 games, the player broke expectations by dropping a whopping 61 points. Knowing how easily the Knicks star could have changed the final outcome of the game, speculation has arisen on whether Wemby’s costly move was just a way to keep the basketball away from Brunson’s hands. Surprisingly, the 20-year-old was not the only one to engage in such an action this season. From Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo to Knicks player Julius Randle, many others have reportedly attempted to engage in a postgame possession of a ball. However, they didn’t end up being fined the same amount that Draymond Green once received for reportedly cursing at a fan.

San Antonio Spurs vs Golden State Warriors match player stats

While Victor Wembanyama’s expensive action during the Spurs-Knicks game was quite memorable, the NBA world seems to have moved on from it now as his team recently faced off against the Golden State Warriors. The player ended up adding another record in the history books through his 32 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 4 steals. According to ‘Stathead Basketball’, such a score has never before been secured by any other rookie in NBA history.

Devin Vassell, the Spurs’ second highest average scorer, unfortunately couldn’t make himself available during the recent game. Therefore, the responsibility of helping out the young rookie on the offensive front fell upon Cedi Osman. For someone who wasn’t even able to cross the 10-point threshold during his previous four games, Osman added 18 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist to the Spurs overall score. The player’s high points somehow came at the cost of his shooting ability, as his 3-pointer percentage dropped to 33.3% and his true shooting percentage to 50%. Tre Jones and Malaki Branham’s input came at a tie through their 12 points, while Sandro Mamukelashvili added 10.

Despite the valuable contribution from the above 5 players, the Spurs fell short and ended up losing the game through a score of 117-113. The Warriors are currently in a do-or-die situation in their effort to secure a higher seed, and the recent game was an example of what that determination could yield.
