The Dallas Mavericks went head-to-head with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the preseason opener at the Etihad Arena. The Mavs had a disappointing start to the season as the Timberwolves swept them in a 111-99 win. However, the team will have a chance to make a comeback at the rematch on October 7th.

The Minnesota Timberwolves kick-started the preseason with their dominating win over the Mavericks, that too without their All-Star guard Anthony Edwards. The 22YO sprained his left ankle during team practice. However, his absence was not much of an issue for the Timberwolves. The Timberwolves entered the game with all guns blazing and established a 20-point lead early on in the game.

The Dallas Mavericks tried to stage a late comeback, however, their efforts did not amount to anything. Even though Luka Doncic dropped a dazzling 25 points, it seemed that the issue that plagued the team last season has yet to be resolved. With some major additions to the roster this season, it looks like the team is still adjusting to the new players.

The Mavs signed the superstar point guard Kyrie Irving three-year, $120 million contract. The front office shelled out a large amount to improve the team’s championship contention chances. However, that might not be going according to plan. Kyrie Irving finished the game with only two points on 1-for-6 shooting from the field in the 14 minutes he played. He is reported to sit out the second preseason game due to left groin soreness. In addition to Uncle Drew, Seth Curry will also be sidelined due to illness. Markieff Morris will also miss the matchup because of an ankle injury.

The Mavs will probably be adding Josh Green in the starting lineup alongside Luka? Doncic, Grant Williams, Dereck Lively II, and Olivier-Maxence in Kyrie’s absence. Luka Doncic was the only starter to score double digits in the game and will be locking horns with Anthony Edwards in today’s game. The Ant-Man missed the first game, but is most likely to play in today’s matchup. Alan Horton, Timberwolves radio announcer, confirmed that the injury is not serious, so we might see him in action today. However, if he is sidelined for this game as well, the Timberwolves will likely move forward with their original lineup.

The Dallas Mavericks added Grant Williams, Dereck Lively II, Dante Exum, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, and Seth Curry this offseason. It looks like the team still needs to work on their on-court chemistry and build rhythm on the hardwood. Although the team has one of the most lethal offensive forces, their defense seemed a little weak.

Minnesota’s star-studded frontcourt overpowered the Mavs, who were outscored in 21 to 8 in rebounds. Karl-Anthony Towns posted 20 points and four rebounds in 17 mind the gap even further with a 13-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
