Sydel Lee-Curry and Ayesha had started their wine venture, Domaine Curry, as an ode to the women of their family. But it wasn’t without problems. And now, looking back, she is reminded of the best piece of advice she got, “Ask for help when it comes to understanding a concept, and don’t be afraid to ask … Now, I’m not hesitant to speak up.”

This is a problem many of us face in our regular life as well. We end up not asking the hows and whys for fear of coming across as unintelligent.

Ayesha Curry learned that the hard way. Both the Curry women are incredibly talented. Living with Stephen Curry, and his family of equally talented and successful men, led them to challenge themselves to the maximum. When the pair started their wine business, the odds were stacked against them. Predominantly a male-driven industry and on top of that, these were two Black women trying to get the stakeholders to take them seriously.

The hard work paid off. Ayesha and Sydel just closed an impressive deal with the fifth-largest wine company in the US. They are now focusing on relaunching their brand after the acquisition.

Not everything is going to be a win: the lesson Mrs. Curry learned

Learning from one’s mistakes has the same importance as asking others for help. Ayesha also has the same opinion. She believes it is the failures that helped her become the successful woman she is now. There have been times when she didn’t have enough products to sell, while at other times, they were sitting ducks.

Recounting her experience during the time things didn’t go the way she wanted, Ayesha says, “Not everything is going to be a win. There will be failures, and it’s these failures that you learn from”. In time, Ayesha learned the ropes of consumer behavior and, more importantly, she practiced four habits to stay on top of things.

  1. Having a to-do list can seem like an unnecessary and, quite frankly, way too simple tool for managing million-dollar businesses. But Ayesha Curry swears by it. Talking to John Boitnott of Entrepreneur, she says that writing things down manually in a journal helps “embed” it in your head.
  2. Multi-tasking is a great skill that is highly valued in today’s world. But when it comes to managing a business venture, it is important to focus on one particular task at a time. Allot specific time for the tasks you have to finish for the day and stick to it. And that’s where the above journal comes into play. To keep you in line.
  3. When you are young, it can seem like you have all the energy in the world to keep the machine running. But as time goes by, this energy can dwindle. Not only does it negatively affect your health, but it also reflects poorly on your business. So, Ayesha says the best practice is to “avoid long work days”.
  4. Finally, the key aspect is sharing the workload. When you start out on a passion project or a brainchild, it is easy to try and micromanage. This was a major issue Stephen Curry‘s beloved had to fight against. But when she finally convinced herself to “delegate” tasks, the mother of three found peace. Letting the experts do what they do best allowed her to excel in what she does best. (Credits: Entrepreneur.com)
