Luka Doncic has been one of the most exciting talents introduced to the NBA world in recent years. The 24-year-old has been a sought-after athlete every season. Although he has faced a fair share of criticism over the years due to a few areas he lacks in, there’s no denying that Doncic is a star player.

Before signing with the Dallas Mavericks in 2018, Doncic had spent 3 years playing in the European league. Now that he is a bona fide star in the NBA, let’s have a look at his statistics in this league as compared to in Europe.

Slovenia-born Doncic is already regarded as one of the best European players of all time. Before joining Real Madrid, he used to play for the Union Olimpija, in a Slovenian basketball league. Doncic was able to prove his mettle as an athlete in the league for which he was rewarded by a Real Madrid contract. He joined the Spanish league in 2015 and stayed there for three seasons. During his best season with Madrid in 2017-28, he averaged 16 points per game. Doncic also had 4.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.

Then in 2018, he was picked by the Atlanta Hawks as 3rd overall pick and was shortly traded to the Mavs. Doncic bagged his first major recognition in the NBA with the 2019 Rookie Of The Year award. He was also picked unanimously for the All-Rookie First Team. He has been part of every All-Star game from 2020 onwards, bringing his total number of appearances to four. Doncic’s regular season average has been 27.6 points per game. In addition to that, he has also managed 8.6 rebounds and 8 assists per game.

But, it is the playoffs where Doncic’s game gets elevated. The 24-year-old averages an impressive 32.5 points per game in the playoffs along with 9.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game.

Luka Doncic is no stranger to criticism

A lot has been said about his game over the years. One aspect for which he receives the most flak is his poor defense. In fact, even some of the NBA athletes have discussed his poor defensive game publicly. Paul George, while discussing Doncic had said, “As good as he is offensively, some people just are not gifted defensively.” The young star is not afraid to acknowledge his shortcomings either. Talking about his team last year, he had said, “It?s our defensive end. I think anybody can score on us. Whoever it is, anybody can score on us”.

During the 2022-23 season, on a list consisting of 539 players, Doncic was placed 440 in the defensive rating. Going into a new season, he looks better equipped to deal with these challenges. Although they have lost both preseason games this year, being hopeful isn’t something the Mavs will have an issue with.
