The Dallas Mavericks recently faced off against the Chicago Bulls. With the Mavericks leading the offensive front, much of the attention was focused on star player Luka Doncic. Over the past six games, the player had been successful in putting up a 30-point triple-double in each of them and was probably hoping to extend his streak to seven. The anticipation rose as Doncic reached a score of 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists right in the middle of the 4 quarter. However, fans were disappointed after team coach Jason Kidd pulled Doncic from the court right after that.
The unceremonious move by Kidd raised questions. Soon after the game, NBA journalist Grant Afseth provided an update on the same by getting a statement from the coach himself. It highlighted Kidd stating “Luka’s setting records, and it becomes tough when you are trying to win the game. You’re also trying to be respectful of the situation, so to try to get him 30, because this is something that’s never been done before, also not putting him in a position to get hurt.”

Prior to the Bulls faceoff, the Dallas Mavericks had won only one of their last six games. While those half dozen games had proven fruitful for the 25-year-old, it didn’t do much to help with the progression of his team. This is probably the reason why Jason Kidd wanted to focus less on one player and more on the squad as a whole. Furthermore, Doncic has been easily prone to injuries during this ongoing NBA season. It was only a few days ago when the player had been placed on the Injury Report as ‘questionable’ in light of his right elbow sprain. If the Mavericks ever end up making it to the playoffs, they will need to have their star player by their side. Therefore, by restricting his play now, the team coach is ensuring that Doncic remains healthy for the long term.

Luka Doncic is setting NBA records left and right. However, his thinking process is not that far from that of his team coach. Similarly to Kidd, the player reportedly feels that his individual accomplishments don’t matter if they come at the expense of the Mavericks poor record.
After setting his fourth consecutive 30-point triple double, Doncic made history by joining the ranks of other players like Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson. Unfortunately, his team ended up losing the same game by 17 points. When discussing the same, the player put out a statement stating “It doesn’t matter. I just want to win, man. That’s it.”
The Mavericks are currently listed as the 8 seed on the Western Conference Points table. With a few more games left before the playoffs, fans will have to wait and see whether Jason’s Kidd strategy will help the Mavericks in the long run.
