Rich Paul Unravels Ex-NFL QB Warren Moon’s Part in Kick-Starting His Relationship With LeBron James

In the world of sports, athletes not only have to perform well, but they need the right guidance to reach stardom. For LeBron James, this came in the form of Rich Paul, his manager. While LeBron’s greatness on the court was undeniable, outside this was an unchartered territory for him. He needed a competent manager to take care of contract negotiations, financial matters, and other opportunities. And Rich’s presence in LeBron’s career was a total game-changer.

Well, then how did these two greats meet? Well, in an interview with podcaster Tim Ferriss, the man behind LeBron’s legacy, Rich Paul takes us back to how he met Bron for the first time. Their first meeting was pure coincidence; no one could have seen it coming. In fact, someone else had a part in this chance encounter, and it was none other than ex-NFL star QB Warren Moon.

Something caught LeBron’s eye

As Rich tells Tim, he met Bron for the first time at the Akron County Airport. Rich continues, “I had a Warren Moon Oilers jersey on that kind of caught his attention, and then he asked me about the jersey and that’s what started the conversation.” LeBron, as we know, was always a fan of the NFL, and seeing Rich with the Warren jersey must have sparked an interest in the wearer.

After this, they bumped into each other yet again at the baggage claim. Rich says that this was when he gave his business card to LeBron. Once Bron got back to Ohio, he reached out to Rich, and the rest is history. Together, these two built a legacy that would live on for decades to come. However, Rich goes on to talk about the one thing that really strengthened their relationship.

The glue of their relationship

Rich looks back on the younger days and feels grateful for the things he had- clothes, jewelry, know-how, and confidence. This enabled him to gel with the rising star, LeBron. But it all came down to one thing: their moms. Rich tells Tim, “I think the thing that drew us together and closer was our moms. I was able to see him and observe things and have conversations with him where he could be himself and not feel the need to protect himself.”

They had a common ground over which they bonded, the struggles that their moms went through, especially with regard to drug abuse. He continues, “I was going through the same thing or I had gone through the same thing. And so that’s what really brought us closer together.”

In the end, we can’t help but think that the remarkable relationship that Bron and Rich share even to this day, all thanks to Warren Moon, deserves credit for the transformation of LeBron’s career. Their meeting at the airport was meant to be, one might even say.
