One year ago today on 7th February 2023, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James made history by becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. That night against the Oklahoma City Thunder, he dropped 38 points, making it the 38,390th of his career. King James broke 6X MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s long-standing record of 38,387 career points, becoming the league’s highest scorer.

The moment King James broke the record was during the final seconds of the third quarter when he shot a fadeaway jumper, scoring his 36th point of the night (38,888th of his career), surpassing Kareem’s number. As Bron was in the air about to release the ball, this beautiful moment was frozen in time thanks to a legendary photo captured by sports photographer Andrew D. Bernstein. It was here that Nike founder Phil Knight was seen celebrating the moment in a way that was completely different from the rest of the crowd.

Almost everyone in the audience had whipped up their phones to take a picture of the historic moment. It was Phil alone, who was locked into the moment, with no phone in sight. Rather than watching it through a screen, the man chose to fully experience the moment with his own eyes. This photo went viral and Phil received a flood of praise from netizens for enjoying the game in true fashion. Today, on the 1st anniversary of his achievement, LeBron took to Instagram to revisit the moment while also crediting Phil for being the real champ. Bron shared a story with the historic photo and pasted an X post that read, “Phil Knight. No Phone. Just Vibes.”

The founder and former CEO of Nike has close ties with LeBron, due to the long-standing partnership Bron shares with the brand since 2003. On this special day, Bron is joined by other entities in celebration of his historic feat.

LeBron is in celebratory mode

In appreciation of the love, LeBron re-shared the array of posts shared by various accounts in his story. Well-known social media network House of Highlights chimed in on the celebration by sharing photos and clips of the moment on Instagram. They wrote, “One year ago today LeBron broke the All-Time scoring record,” followed by a crown emoji.

The Lakers, on their part, also posted the iconic photo of Bron holding up a sheet with the score “38,390” and the date “Feb 7, 2023” written over it, which was taken after the game.

In addition, all things basketball website SLAM also took to Instagram to share photos of the historic night. The caption was plain and simple, “We witnessed history one year ago. The best scorer ever.”

Bron’s athlete empowerment brand UNINTERRUPTED chipped in with a similar post with the caption, “History was made one year ago today.” History was made indeed. At 39, LeBron is still at the forefront of the NBA, smashing records as he goes.
