The 2023 FIBA World Cup was a disaster for Team USA. Not only did they not win, they lost to Canada, and in the end, Noah Lyles’s “World Champion of what?” comment haunted the young team. The 2024 Paris Olympics is the last chance for modern greats of the game like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry to show up. However, the game is a lot different now with young phenom Victor Wembanyama ready to lead the French team.

Wemby has been dominating this rookie season. While playing restricted minutes, he is taking over both offense and defense and will surely become great in the future. Regardless, this 2016 NBA champion doesn’t think it’s the French phenom’s time yet. Let’s see why.

Does Victor Wembanyama have hope against a team led by future Hall of Famers?

Channing Frye sat down with Hoops Hype for an interview about various things, primarily the Paris Olympics. At the onset itself, he was asked if he thinks France can take the gold medal away from Team USA?” His answer was blunt, yet had solid ground. “No, I don’t think that’s possible at all. We were talking about who’s going to be on that Team USA roster next year, and I think what people aren’t taking into consideration is that this is going to be LeBron’s last year, KD’s last year, it might be Steph’s last year,” said Frye.

He further said given rooster possibilities with players like Devin Booker, Paul George, and Joel Embid that the team would be “the only thing in our generation as comparable is a team that had like Jordan, Bird.” Despite saying France is going to be “nasty”, he doesn’t think they have a chance. In the end, he concludes by talking about Nikola Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo playing for their national teams, concluding that it will be a great year for basketball in general. However, that isn’t discounting Wemby, he also applauds the 7’4 giant in the interview.

Currently, Wemby leads the league in Blocks with 3.1 as a rookie, which is no easy feat. Other than that, he averages a double-double with 19.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. Despite the Spurs struggling with winning this season, if Wemby develops at the pace he has been there’s no stopping him. Do you think Wemby and France have a chance next year?
