Following the inclusion of veteran point guard Chris Paul into the roster, the Golden State Warriors have a different dynamism to the side. Importantly, the head coach Steve Kerr recently pointed out the same. On one hand, the Dubs are arguably the most successful teams in recent times. On the other hand, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson have been the core three who played a massive role in wielding the four rings. However, Kerr’s recent statement on CP3 definitely created shock waves in the Dub Nations. Some fans had taken offense to it.

Following the Finals loss against the Toronto Raptors in 2019, the Dubs under Steph saw new lows. For the next two years, the team failed to even qualify for the playoffs. When fans and pundits wrote off the team, it rose again to glory, proving everyone wrong. The team definitely saw leaders in the team. But, Kerr’s recent statement seemed to conveying something else.

Featuring on the recent podcast episode of 95.7 The Game, Steve Kerr made a massive statement. While talking about Chris Paul‘s role in the team, he said, “I think he’s the perfect fit for us right now. Frankly, I think we needed leadership.” This statement sure will raise a few eyebrows.

Stephen Curry has always been considered as the leader of the pack while DrayMagic stood as the vocal leader at most times. Even former Finals MVP, Andre Iguodala recently said, “Steph is the leader… But Draymond has a load of the leadership that makes that team, and that’s what makes him great,” in Gil’s Arena podcast.

However, it didn’t have positive reaction from fans on social media, rightly so. Fans expressed their disappointment in Kerr for not recognizing his champions as leaders. One user said, “A team with the greatest PG of all time needed leadership???”

Moreover, this isn’t the first time Kerr has dropped a controversial statement about the team. He recently made a claim about ‘Athleticism’ in the roster.

Kerr about athleticism

In the 2023 preseason, the Warriors seemed to be in song with their compact roster. Importantly, 20-year-old Jonathan Kuminga has been showing some promise for the team near the paint. After his thunderous performance against the Sacramento Kings to lead the side to victory, Kerr made a bold statement. He said, “We are not the most athletic team, we are skilled team… If he [Kuminga] can attack and get to the rim and get to the foul line, then makes us a better team.” Not to forget Iguodala’s heroics in 2015 playoffs.
