Joel Embiid had an outstanding 2023/24 season, positioning himself as a top contender to defend his MVP title. He maintained an impressive average of 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game, leading the league in scoring. However, on 30th January, Embiid suffered a torn meniscus when Jonathan Kuminga landed on his knee while vying for a loose ball.

Initial reports hinted at a prolonged absence for Embiid, but now we have a clear timeline for his return. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, “Joel Embiid underwent left meniscus procedure on Tuesday and will be re-evaluated in approximately four weeks.” He also stated that there’s growing belief that the door isn’t closed for Embiid’s return before the regular season ends. Following his meniscus surgery, medical experts estimate that Embiid will require approximately 4 to 8 weeks of rest and rehabilitation, suggesting a potential return around mid-March at the earliest.

Embiid’s injury couldn’t have occurred at a worse time for the Sixers, as they have slid from the 3rd to the 5th position in the Eastern Conference standings following his injury. This prompts the question; can the Sixers stay competitive while Embiid recovers from his injury?

Can the Sixers cope with the absence of Joel Embiid?

Joel Embiid was arguably one of the best players of the 2023/24 season, if not the best. It is a hammer blow for a Sixers side that were flying before Embiid’s knee injury. However, the 76ers have faced difficulties in securing victories without Embiid on the court, managing just four wins and 11 losses during his absence. This just goes on to show the level of impact the reigning MVP had on the Sixers winning games.

However, with more than 30 regular-season games still remaining, HC Nick Nurse must come up with new tactics to keep them near the top of the Eastern Conference standings. First time All-Star Tyrese Maxey must step up in the absence of Embiid. He has been one of the breakout stars of the 2023/24 season. The 23-year-old All-Star is averaging a career-high 25.9 points, 6.4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game this season.
