The values humans carry in their lives shape and mould them for the future journey through adversities. Thus, frequent encounters with struggles since early life are of paramount importance in the making of a person. Sonya Curry, the mother of millionaire Stephen Curry, stated the same.

She opened up about her early, uneasy struggles in childhood that gave her valuable life lessons. The NBA star’s mother shared those publicly as the world got to hear about her perspective on human growth.

In a podcast episode of Foster and Friends,?the NBA fans received into her childhood development. Her early life was filled with challenges as she mentioned,?“It wasn’t easy”. Her mother became a single mom when Sonya was young, leaving the family with monetary struggles.

“We never thought we were poor, we just didn’t think we had a lot”, she highlighted. So, from a young age, Sonya had to work several jobs to provide for her family. One struggle she faced was related to the existential crisis, as she wondered about “what my purpose is gonna be”. Struggling to fit in, those adversities gave the 57-year-old “a lot of substance and class”.?She eventually understood the meaning behind all this, as she started to appreciate it more and more. Struggle is about making you better“, she mentioned, looking back at her youth.

Another aspect of her life she felt grateful for was her family environment.?“I was fortunate enough to have a great support system,”?Stephen’s mother stated before talking about her cousins. Watching them go to college and pick up sports influenced her massively, as she “wanted to be like them”.?This helps us understand one thing better now.

How she might have inspired Stephen Curry

Motivated by her cousins, Sonya picked up volleyball, track and field, and, more importantly, basketball. Later she got married to the NBA veteran Dell Curry, raising three children with him. The oldest one, Stephen Curry, as we know, changed the game forever and his mother might have played a major role in that.

Stephen has been directly involved with basketball from a tender age. Growing up in a household that promoted athletics, the Splash Brother was blessed with fortune. The Golden State Warriors star did not take it for granted, as with the support from his parents, he took over the NBA world in his early 20s.

So, in a way, life again came in a full circle, as they both needed each other to thrive. The challenges could not make either of them bow down as they pushed through it together, with help from one another.
