Kyrie Irving is among the most sought-after stars in the league’s modern era. In his career, Kai has played for several legacy franchises including the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers. While the 6’2 guard is unanimously acknowledged as the most skilled player in the NBA, there are several things in his past that haunt his performance.

Particularly, his comments and his stances on social change. More recently, Kai’s step-mom and manager cleared the air about his voice and his choices and she also elaborated on his fight for social change.

Shetellia Riley Irving is the manager and stepmother of Kyrie. She recently appeared on the Earn Your Leisure podcast. The host drew comparisons of the former NBA champion to legend Muhammad Ali for his outspoken nature. “When we talk about “taking a stand,” it still carries a negative connotation, and I would love to figure out what is a better word for it,” said Shetellia.

She further added, “I don’t want that word controversy to stand, and if we can use what Kyrie went through with the vaccine and say hey, we’re going to change that and we’re going to create this new word and basically make that a word of positivity.”

Previously, Kai has lost over $17,651,271 due to fines in the league. While much of that amount is the penalty for missing a game, $2 million of that was when he was suspended due to ‘controversial’ comments made outside the hardwood floor. Particularly for his hard stances on several sensitive issues. However, recently after the loss against the Memphis Grizzlies, Head Coach Jason Kidd came to his defense.

Grizzlies v. Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks suffered a disappointing defeat against the Memphis Grizzlies, losing 94 to 108. Kyrie Irving displayed a somber mood after the game. Addressing the media, Mavs coach Jason Kidd took responsibility for the team’s challenging night, stating, “He probably got a little frustrated with getting face-guarded, and we have to do a better job of getting him the ball.”

Kidd went on to express his readiness to shoulder the blame, saying, “I’ll take the blame for that because we didn’t put him in a good position to be successful.” Despite Kidd’s gracious gesture, Irving wasn’t inclined to let things rest, asserting that he wouldn’t allow “sleeping dogs (or in this case, bears) lie.” Do you think the Mavs will bounce back?
