Stephen Curry started a storm when he declared that he was the best Point Guard ever over Magic Johnson. This debate metamorphosed into something else entirely. People started to debate what is the definition of Point Guard and whether is Curry more of a combo Guard than a PG. These arguments took another flight when, as per Stephen A. Smith, Michael Jordan debunked Steph’s notions. And as if to hit the nail in the coffin, Magic Johnson came back with a strong reply and reminded him of his accolades.

Stephen Curry trying to ameliorate the situation
In late August, Curry appeared at Gil’s Arena and answered, “Are you the best Point Guard ever?”. Backing himself, He replied, “Yes, it’s me and Magic. That’s the conversation?”
He added, “Measuring eras against each other, that’s what basketball as a sport is all about. That’s why people watch. That’s why people get into debates about it. I love it. I’mma Put me on my own team. Rep myself”.

More than a month after these comments, he seems to have realized that he made a claim that can be challenged on many technical fronts. 95.7 The Game’s Senior Digital Director Whitley Sandretto asked him, “This summer you said that you are the best point guard of all time. Michael Jordan disagreed and then Magic Johnson, he said himself. What do you think about that dialogue? You think that’s more of a generational thing”.
Replying to this, the sharpshooter expressed, “It’s all that. It’s also the unsolvable debate. That’s why everyone asks this question and why everyone loves to talk about it because I can say I am the best. Magic can defend his position, any other guard can chime in”.

Steph Curry on MJ and Magic disagreeing with calling himself the greatest PG of all time:
“It’s the beautiful thing about basketball and the eras… Obviously, there’s so much respect and admiration for what Magic did in his career. His resume is second to none… If you’re in… pic.twitter.com/VjiSKpiB4Z

Giving his full props to Magic Johnson, he added, “It’s the beautiful thing about basketball and the era. Obviously, there’s so much respect and admiration for what Magic did in his career. His resume is second to none. I was talking to a bunch of guys in the league who understand how we kinda move through. I call them “silly debates”, even though we are talking about serious things“.

Curry loves that he is in the GOAT PG convo
He further expanded, “If you’re in that conversation, it’s one of those pieces, no matter what era you are from, no matter what your style of play was, traditional point guard, hybrid, whatever, if you in that conversation, then it’s a job well done. I’m still alive and tryna add to it. And that’s what I love about the conversation”.

After Magic Johnson challenged his claims, these comments came as a breath of fresh air. Surely, this is a much better explanation of things than his comments during Gilbert Arenas’ show. The Guard showcases that he understands the nuances, and although he calls it a “silly debate”, he doesn’t shy away from engaging in it.
