For the past two decades, the NBA’s luxury tax system has penalized clubs that exceed salary cap levels. Except for two teams?the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans?every team has been in the taxpayer’s club at least once during this span. What is the aggregate cost of this dedication to success? A whopping $2.82 billion in fines. Some high-spending clubs have enjoyed success, while others, despite large expenditures, have had disappointing regular seasons and few playoff victories.

Among all, the Golden State Warriors actually have the biggest tax bill. The franchise has borne a half-billion-dollar tax penalty load throughout the years. It is a monument to its unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Surprisingly, the GSW has spent $334 million in the previous two years alone, due in part to the punishing repeater tax scheme. Furthermore, with forecasts reaching $200 million, they are on track to beat their previous record for the biggest single-season tax penalty. So the total tax penalties they have to pay is $501,550,833.

In just 13 years, the value of their franchise has risen from $450 million to a mind-boggling $7 billion. And all the credit for that goes to the players who gave their heart and soul to the franchise and were able to achieve glory. This remarkable growth is defined by their 6 championship wins in eleven Finals appearances, solidifying their dynasty status.
