Despite recent setbacks and criticism surrounding Simmons’ game, former Kiwi pro Marks believes there is still room for excellence in his #10. “I think knowing that he?s mid-20s and he has still hopefully not reached his prime,”?he suggested.

Marks also acknowledged that if Simmons was older, it might be more challenging to expect significant development in his skills. But given his relatively young age and potential untapped talent, the Nets’ GM remains hopeful that the Australian can return to an All-Star level of play.

?I think the hope is that he returns to that (All-Star) level of play. I mean, if he was 35 years old, I wouldn?t honestly be able to tell you that.?

Indeed, Simmons has rarely lived up to his name. A USBWA National Freshman of the Year recipient, the Melbourne-born, was the first pick of the NBA draft in 2016.

He showed glimpses of his enormous talent in the years to come, winning the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2018. Yet, Simmons could never get his breakthrough season, and many blame it due to his misconduct. As it stands, he is the most-fined player in NBA history, which undoubtedly sways public opinion.

Fans express doubt over Marks’ judgment

Not everyone shares Marks’ optimistic outlook. Many fans have expressed their concerns over Simmons’ status as an important player.
