Luka Doncic and Joel Embiid have been the standout players of the 2023-24 season so far. Both have achieved remarkable feats in recent matchups, with Embiid posting a historic 70-point performance against the San Antonio Spurs. However, Luka eclipsed Embiid’s performance by scoring 73 points against the Atlanta Hawks just three days later.

Both Embiid and Luka were unstoppable on their respective career nights, commanding the game at will and showcasing their offensive dominance. However, despite their remarkable performances, Luka and Embiid were nowhere close to breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 100 points in a single game. Many consider Wilt’s record unbreakable. However, 4x NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins believes that Luka and Embiid are capable of surpassing Wilt’s seemingly unbreakable 100-point record in the near future.

In the latest episode of the Bully Ball podcast, host Rachel Nichols quizzed Boogie, “Do you think we’re getting to a 100-point game from someone? Do you think we’ll get to a 200-point game for a team?” To which he replied by saying, “I’ll go with a guy scoring a 100. I think the best option of us seeing that is either going to be a Luka Doncic or a Joel Embiid. I think those two guys are the two best scorers in the game.”

While both Luka and Embiid are generational offensive talents, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point record is a tall order. The defensive schemes right now are much more sophisticated than they were in the 1960s. Furthermore, the concept of load management has become more prevalent in recent years. Players rarely get to play more than 40 minutes in a match, especially if the game is a foregone conclusion. However, given the ever-increasing offensive production and efficiency, Wilt’s record, along with witnessing a team scoring 200 points in a game, could be just around the corner.

Offensive efficiency and output on the rise in the NBA

In the 2023-24 NBA season, teams are performing at an unprecedented level. Offensive strategies in the league have become more advanced and efficient in recent years, and this trend is expected to continue in the seasons to come. Just a decade earlier, the Los Angeles Clippers led the NBA in offense, with an offensive rating of 112.1. However, that offensive rating would rank 25th in the 2023-24 season.

On an individual level, only five players had more than 25 points per game during the 2013-14 season. Now, that number has ballooned to eighteen players, with Joel Embiid leading the NBA with a mind-boggling 36 points per game. The offensive output is predicted to only increase in seasons to come.
